The LadyBits Download V.1.2
The LadyBits Download V.1.2
As promised, here is another weekly dose of LadyBits wisdom. Enclosed are some of our latest and greatest articles from our various publishing outposts and from around the web. Be sure to stay with us to the bottom, where you’ll find some fun activities to get you out of the house and away from your computer, so you have something to Tweet about later. Seriously though, we hope you'll show your support for LadyBits by sharing this out with your friends and neighbors (your cubicle mates, especially)!
The Week in LadyBits Content:
Using and not using our reproductive parts
Just yesterday, Anne Hill posted Born at the Right Time, in which she advises parents to teach their kids without fear, so they’ll learn to weather even the toughest times, like the early ‘80s.
On to a more modern motherhood, read Anna Billstrom’s Pregpreneur: Pregnant + Entrepreneur to find out what happens when you launch a startup and get pregnant at the same time.
If you’re more interesting on preventing that whole mess, Erin Biba wades through the misinformation about hormonal birth control flying around lately and sets the record straight in Why You Shouldn’t Worry About NuvaRing.
It’s hard out there for a lady
Moving a bit north, biologically, there’s also a piece from Refinery29 that applauds five forward-thinking companies for integrating tech savvy ways to minimize our Bra Size Bewilderment.
Also on Refinery29, we made a handy dandy slideshow of Five Sustainable Fashion Brands that will help you save the Earth with flare.
If you aren't the habit of scrutinizing vitamin bottle labels, you may want to start after reading Hannah Waters' report on What's Really In Dietary Supplements.
On to something you can’t buy just yet, there’s Adrienne LaFrance’s breakdown of That Sex App for Google Glass. Sure, it might not be a reality yet, but if you’re worried your hot sex with a Google Glass wearer might have been recorded for all eternity, it’s best to read up on the iPhone app.
And for our take on Buzzfeed’s signature listicles, we made 39 Things Women in Their 30s Need for 2014. The recommendations are sometimes practical, sometimes not, and mostly tongue-in-cheek.
Bad ass lady news
We couldn’t stop talking about New York Times Magazine’s recent cover, especially its questionable graphic, so here’s a roundup of our reactions to That Time the Times ‘Shopped Hillary into a Testicle.
And because no mention of bad assery would be complete without uttering the name of Queen Bey herself, we’ve got an astute explanation of how Beyonce Broke the Music Business. Teaser: she cut out the middle man like no one ever before.
Serious lady news
For a somber turn in our fair newsletter, we’d like to direct your attention to Your Friends and Rapists. After a college experience with rape, Sarah Nicole Prickett talks with an expert about what constitutes date rape in a very important piece we should all be reading.
LadyBits has covered workplace harassment before, but this week, our very own Editor-in-Chief Arikia Milikan gave us an all-new perspective with her chilling tale of power and intrigue. In A Red-Blooded American Introduction to Journalism, she introduces her first mentor and his attempts to seduce her. No doubt, we’re paying special attention.
And in Popular Science (LadyBits is everywhere!) Kelly Bourdet wonders: Why Do We Blame the Obese for Their Obesity? Turns out biologist Dr. Jeffrey Friedman agrees and points to some research on the hormone leptin which suggests the obese could be that way because of their genes (as opposed to the oft-blamed lack of self-control).
Links From Around the Webz:
(Photo)shop talk: Jezebel put $10K on the virtual table for anyone who could provide unretouched pics from Lena Dunham’s Vogue photo shoot. They got the shots (and likely the page views) but probably weren’t anticipating on being called out on their “total mean girls shit." Check out Lena Dunham’s response too.
Buy me now: American Apparel is bringing bush back.
The talkies: According to this infographic, the key to winning a best actress Oscar is to play a wife. That or just be Meryl Streep.
